2010 marks the end of the ARRA Tax Stimulus credits. But even after the federal Tax Credits expire, there are still lots of opportunities to obtain state and municipal credits and rebates by using qualified energy efficient equipment and parts. The ARRA Stimulus Package allows homeowners to claim 30% of the costs for installation of qualified, higher efficiency equipment, up to a maximum of $1,500 in tax credits for their $5,000 total expenditure. However, these same credits also apply to all sorts of energy-saving upgrades including HVAC, , doors, insulation, sealing, or roofing. Once a homeowner’s $5,000 expenditure ceiling is met and they have claimed their $1,500 tax credit, ARRA incentive funds are no longer available to them.

Still unclear about the details? Here are some guidelines that may help you better understand the program: Installations must be completed during 2009 and 2010. ARRA incentives are awarded in the form of tax credits, not rebate checks (manufacturer or local incentives may differ). Costs for labor and installation supplies are also eligible, if used in conjunction with qualified equipment. And qualified expenditures in several areas may be combined. For example, an HVAC system costing the homeowner $4,000 may be combined with $1,000 spent on qualified window upgrades, for a total of $5,000 qualified upgrade expenditures. With the proper Manufacturer Certification documentation (see Manufacturer Certification Statements, below), the homeowner would be eligible to claim a credit of up to $1,500 on their taxes for the year of installation. (Homeowners are advised to consult with their tax accountant for specific details.)
